Fascia and soffit are the unsung heroes of a home's roofing system. The fascia board runs along the edge of the roofline and provides the mounting surface for your gutters. The soffit covers the underside of the roof overhang and is the intake point for attic ventilation in most homes. When either of these components is damaged — typically from water infiltration, wood rot, or pest damage — the consequences extend to your gutter system, your attic ventilation, and in serious cases, the structural integrity of the roof edge. At Roof Repair Expert LLC, we repair and replace fascia, soffit, and exterior trim for homeowners throughout Murfreesboro and the surrounding area. Contact us for a free estimate.

The fascia board is the vertical board that runs along the lower edge of the roof, capping the rafters and providing the structural base for gutter attachment. It's the board you're looking at when you see a line of gutters running along the roofline. The soffit is the horizontal surface beneath the fascia, covering the area between the fascia and the wall. Together, they finish the roofline, protect the rafter tails from weather exposure, and provide the essential ventilation pathway from the outside air into the attic space.
The most common signs that fascia or soffit has been compromised include: peeling or bubbling paint on the fascia; visibly soft, discolored, or crumbling wood at the fascia board; gutters that are pulling away from the house (often because the rotted fascia can no longer hold the hanger screws); staining or moisture on the interior side of the fascia in the attic space; visible holes, gaps, or soft spots in the soffit; and signs of pest activity (birds, squirrels, or insects) entering the soffit line.
Wood: Traditional wood fascia and soffit boards can be painted to match the home's trim but are susceptible to moisture damage and require periodic painting and maintenance.
Aluminum Wrap: Aluminum fascia wrap involves covering existing wood fascia with a pre-bent aluminum panel, providing a durable, moisture-resistant surface that eliminates painting requirements and resists rot. This is a popular upgrade during roofing projects.
Vinyl Soffit: Vinyl soffit panels are available in both vented and solid configurations. They're moisture-resistant, durable, low-maintenance, and available in a wide range of colors. Vented vinyl soffit is the standard for new installations and replacements where intake ventilation is needed.
Vented soffit is the primary intake source for passive attic ventilation systems. Air enters through the soffit perforations, travels through the insulation baffles, and exits through ridge vents at the peak of the roof. This continuous airflow reduces attic heat in summer, prevents moisture buildup year-round, and is a key factor in extending shingle life and avoiding ice dams. If your soffit is non-vented or your existing soffit vents are blocked by insulation, your attic ventilation is compromised.
Minor fascia damage — a short section of rot at a single gutter drop — can often be repaired by cutting out and replacing the affected section. Widespread rot, multiple affected areas, or fascia that's been compromised along the full run typically warrants a full replacement. We'll assess the extent of the damage during your free inspection and give you a recommendation that makes practical sense.
